Description

Mark Smith is Professor of Social Work at the University of Dundee, Scotland, an expert on residential child care settings – a background which led Professor Smith to research relevant child sexual abuse scandals such as the Jimmy Savile saga.

Bettina will discuss with Professor Smith the current panic over assumed endemic child sexual abuse in residential care. How and why the moral crusade against child abuse took hold, from the McMartin preschool investigations through to Satanic Ritual Abuse scandals in the UK, to more recent events involving Jimmy Savile, and Carl Beech, who falsely accused members of the British elite of being part of a paedophile ring.

What’s behind our society’s obsession with sexual abuse of children, which attracts so much more attention than children being brutally abused, even murdered? Even after the McMartin scandal and many similar witchhunts proved to have no substance, moral panics over child sexual abuse continue to capture the public imagination and cause untold damage to the accused and the institutions where they work.

Learn the truth about how easily the public has been misled by authorities who use these issues for virtue-signalling and a media more interested in headlines than real evidence
