What Did The President Know? And When Did He Know It?

    The old Watergate Questions.

Nearly two weeks ago, Seymour Hersh, the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, published a blockbuster article entitled: "How America Took Out The Nordstream Pipeline." As expected, the reaction from Washington came quickly, with the White House, in particular, categorically denying all of the article's allegations.

But the focus has changed in the few days since the article was published. The four principal members of the Administration featured in the Article, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and especially President Biden, have not faced an angry room of press reporters, shouting to get to the bottom of all this.

Nor have they been called before Congress to testify about what they may have known about the Pipeline's destruction.

That doesn't seem to be how the "modern" Washington works. In a Kafkaesque world, in today's nation, the "high and mighty" ride above the petty concerns of "we the people." A bureaucratic underlying, well down the food chain may be asked a pointed question. But even those moments are few and far between. Neither the President, the two Secretaries of State, nor the National Security Advisor, have been asked straightforwardly: Did you plan to blow up the Nordstream Pipeline?

Why this hasn't happened is inexplicable, especially in light of the specific comments of the President.

On February 7, 2022, in a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Schultz, the two nation's leaders were asked about sanctions, specifically the Nordstream Pipelines. After all, as National Public Radio (NPR) reported, Germany is one of the largest natural gas importers in the world. At the same time, Russia has one of the most extensive natural gas reserves.

At this point, in February 2022, Nordstream I was fully operational and supplying Germany with a substantial portion of its energy needs. At the same time, Nordstream II was under a German Sanction and not operating.

Biden then makes the following very carefully worded statement:

"If Russia invades, that means tanks or troops crossing the border of Ukraine again, there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2," Biden said. "We will bring an end to it."

Asked how the U.S. would ensure that, Biden did not offer specifics: "I promise you: We will be able to do it."

Biden only refers to Nordstream II, the Pipeline under German sanction. At first blush, you'll notice he only spoke of one part of the Pipeline complex. But then he makes the very chilling comment, "there will no longer be a Nordstream II." That's an existential threat. He is saying that Nordstream II will not exist. And seven months, nearly to the day, that's what happened. Nordstream ceased to exist. It was destroyed.

Seemingly no one made that connection except Hersh. Reading through the American Press' articles following Nordstream's destruction, you are hard-pressed to find a single report that doesn't accuse Russia of the attack.

After Biden ends his comment by assuring reporters that they will follow through on their threat to "bring Nordstream to an end." NPR then adds a rare editorial comment by saying, "that's a point Biden administration officials have stressed in recent weeks." In other words, NPR had heard from other Administration sources that they would bring the Nordstream Pipeline to an end.

In his article, Hersh says that at this point, Agency officials believed that Biden had let the "Cat out of the bag" and disclosed their clandestine plans to blow up the Pipeline. So much so that they thought they could classify the operation as merely "classified" and not "covert." A distinction that allowed the Administration to avoid some potential Congressional oversight.

So, put it all together, and here's what we've got. We have as close to a smoking gun admission by the President that he would destroy the Nordstream Pipelines. Explicitly take out Nordstream II, and implicitly take out Nordstream I.

The problem is that many of our leaders in Washington, and much of the general public, view Biden as the "crazy Uncle" in the attic. And we fear that he may have gone too far this time.

As one of the Agencies in Hersh's article says, "this was an act of war." Indeed, if it's all true, then Biden may have placed us perilously close to World War III.

Many of us don't want to face that fact, so we'd rather blame a "yellow" journalist than think that America has wantonly destroyed vital infrastructure and threatened global peace.

Unfortunately, we cannot run from this. The time has come. We must ask the President:

"What did he know? And when did he know it?"
