    ‘ . . . gender can involve fun and play . . . ’

Disclaimer: a good deal of study will be required to clarify our position on this topic.

In the first person today . . .

when I was studying feminist literary critical theory in the early 1990’s, we touched on the hijra of India, considered a ‘third gender.’

‘ . . . all over India, poor parents sold their children to traders who emasculated them.’

‘The officiant [would] tie a thread around the young man’s penis and testicles and draw the knot progressively tighter to anesthetize the organs. Then, with a slash of a razor blade, he sliced straight through.’

That is, readers, I was taught that hijra were victims of poverty and ghastly mutilation. One detail I’ve not forgotten is that those who died during the ceremony were ‘buried under the floor boards.’

Fast forward to today. What is the contemporary reality? Has 'hijra' been ‘folded into’ the cool and groovy world of ‘trans’? Let us invest effort into understanding what is going on here.
