The following is astonishingly and reprehensibly simplistic, but we must maintain a good pace.

A colossal socio-academic brawl broke out in the west in the 1960’s*, a time at which right-wing junk science still underpinned formal discrimination against non-whites and women and sexual minorities.

The left wing (and feminism) began gaining massive traction (as did the environmental movement) as opponents of this discrimination. Meanwhile, Darwinism was being re-worked, and a new academic field – evolutionary biology/psychology – was developing as technology allowed measurement of brain functions.**

The left wing loathed neo-Darwinism because its premises seemed to support right-wing values. The left wing also loathed the splendid data published by ‘human-nature researchers’ because it likewise seemed to justify right-wing values.

The left could only see any science that didn’t unequivocally support its ideology as the enemy. They took an uncompromisingly antagonistic stance: everything is always and only environment.

And they got away with this because they held the moral high ground in their quest (in the west) to end formalized discrimination.

The data itself – re-workings of Darwinism and insights into brain function – should have been unproblematic.

One odd result has been that, from then until now, there has been a tragic ‘split’ between science and society. Society operates on It’s All And Only Environment because the ‘driving force’ remains the focus on ending discrimination. Science has 95% supported the drive to end discrimination, but its data remains ‘the enemy’ because it doesn’t validate left ideology. (Neither does it validate the old right-wing claims.)
