If everyone believed this proposition, then you’d have an explanation for the disappearance of gas from the tank in the barn every night – it’s those kitchen chairs gassing up for their midnight hijinks!

The point here, readers, is to illustrate a primary reality of the human condition:

once you accept some untrue idea, you can then (at least for a while . . . ) add any number of untruths to the pile.

    Now read the quotation below:

‘There is no “proper” gender, a gender proper to one sex rather than another, which is in some sense that sex’s cultural property.’

    Judith Butler, 1991

This claim of Butler’s is one of the most influential statements of modern history. It’s also wrong.

    Say what?

Well, it’s a standard left-wing statement of ‘anti-essentialism’: everything is cultural. But everything isn’t cultural. Biological predisposition exists.

Certainly it is correct to say that historical gender roles were quite arbitrary, and foisted upon people – but that doesn’t make Butler’s claim correct.

    Now let’s disprove the statement:

men will have sex more readily than women. Women, conversely, are more cautious in their sexual activity -- for a woman, one sexual act may result in a lifetime of parenting.

So, a male gender that assumed ‘less discerning about sexual partners’ and a female gender that assumed ‘more discerning about sexual partners’ would be, respectively, ‘proper’ to the men and women of that culture.
